Topfield T5800PVR

A couple of weeks ago, I bought myself a Topfield T5800 PVR and thought after a few weeks of using it I'd mention my experiences. I got the 160Gb version for approx. £250 from eBuyer, despite arriving the day after eBuyer said, I can't really complain about their service.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the Toppy it's basically a little freeview box with 2 tuners and a hard drive, so you can watch and records digital TV. The two tuners let you record two channels at once or watch another channel while you are recording. If you are recording on both tuners, you can watch a third channel as long as it is broadcast on the same frequency as one of the two you are recording. The one thing the Topfield has that other similar products don't is a USB 2.0 port on the back which can be used to download recorded programmes to a PC or upload updates.

First impressions were good, the unit itself is pretty small and really simple to set up, the remote feels a little cheap but is functional and reasonable easy to use once you get used to it. The 7 day EPG is much better than on my old £20 box and recording programs from it is simple. One early problem I had was that I quite often cut off the start of the program, I then had to go through all my timers once I'd set them and add 5 mins on the start. I later found out that when creating a timer from the EPG you can edit the start time there and then which makes adding the padding pretty straightforward.

The quality of recorded files seem as good quality as watching live TV and bringing up the list of recorded programs and choosing which one to watch couldn't be easier.

I had anticipated problems with the USB connection as I wanted to connect it to my Linux box rather than to a Windows machine, but fortunately, there is a nice little open source program called Puppy which makes doing this a doddle. I was surprised when it worked first time with no problems. Being able to get the video of the box and onto a PC means no worry about hard drive space issues on the Topfield.

While the Topfield does allow you to edit the videos to cut out adverts, I found that it was quite limited and would cut the video at key frames so you would lose parts of the show rather than just the adverts. After some experimentation I found the best way to remove the adverts was to download the file to my PC and remove them using Video Redo which is almost effortless to do.

As well as recording, the Topfield also provides timeshifting functionality, although I have to say I've only used this once to try it out and never found the need again.

It's surprising how much there is on TV that I want to watch when I can see everything that's on in the next week rather than only seeing what is on when I want to watch TV.

Overall, the Topfield is by no means flawless and is probably a little expensive for what it does, but I have found that it allows me to watch TV I want to watch when I want to watch it.

Festival Time II

Friday night and we popped into Cineworld to check if we got a discount on the EIFF tickets with out Unlimited card, good news and bad news, we get buy one get one free, but not until the next day. Also the first film on our list "The Flying Scotsman" was already sold out.

So Saturday at half noon we all met up at Cineworld to buy our tickets, the 15 strong list had been bumped back up to 15 after replacing "The Flying Scotsman" with "Little Miss Sunshine". Trouble struck when we arrived to find the Internet connection was down and we had to divert to the Filmhouse to buy tickets. When we got there we were put in a special queue but there was still a number of people before us buying huge amounts of tickets. After an hour and a half, we had booked all our tickets, and as luck would have it, all 15 films on the list were still available.

So the final list of movies we're going to see at the EIFF are:

Summer Palace
Art School Confidential
The Host
Little Miss Sunshine
Mirrorball : Made in Japan
Shut Up and Shoot Me
Hotel Harabati
Luxury Car
Midnight My Love
3 Degrees Colder
The Lost
H6 - Diary of an Assassin
The Ring Finger
How is Your Fish Today?
An Inconvienent Truth

Festival Time

Well, the Edinburgh Festivals will soon be upon us and with the program of the EIFF (Edinburgh International Film Festival) being released Wednesday past, Rosie, Neil and I spent last night going through it with a fine tooth-comb to create a shortlist of movies we wanted to see. This became a very long list, and after a lot of cutting out movies we definately couldn't see and arranging the ones left to pick the best ones I've narrowed it down to a slim 15 films.

Unfortunately, the ticket prices for that will come to about £120. Hopefully, we can get the "Cineworld Unlimited" discount again this year and reduce the cost to a mere £60, otherwise I think further edits to the list may be in order.

The Box Office opens today, so a trip to the cinema is in order tonight to try and buy the tickets.

Andy Lau Challenge: Update

Last night after watching the Mah-Jong comedy movie Fat Choi Spirit I reached film number 50 in the 100 film Andy Lau challenge. With July 3rd being the mid point of the year, I was 8 days late in reaching the mid point in the movies, but with 174 days of the year left to watch the remaining 50 movies, a target of 2 movies a week should still be enough to make the challenge.

Also worth a note is that Fat Choi spirit was the 100th film of the year, so on target for 200 again, with half being Andy Lau films.

Last.fm skewed

I was just looking through the last.fm charts for some bands I listen to and I've noticed that for the smaller bands at least, I (along with possibly my brother) have managed to skew the similar artists lists.

For example, Amplifico, who are unlike most of the music I listen to, now have (now defunct) English metal band, Jor as their number 14 artist in the similar artists charts. This is two places above KT Tunstall, despite a large number of Amplifico fans also being KT fans and Amplifico being far closer to KT. At number 24 in the similar artists charts is another English metal band, Landmine Spring and at number 35, Withered an American metal band.

Withered share a similar fate with Jor being listed as the 5th most similar artist. Jor are actually listed as being most similar to Withered, with Landmine Spring second and Amplifico even managing to make an appearance at number 21.
