Koba: Korean BBQ
So we're in London for the weekend, I'd only researched two places to go for dinner and after a long walk through Camden we'd discovered that you should probably book in advance for a Saturday night at the Asakusa. This left us with option number 2, Korean Barbecue.
My love of Korean cinema meant that at some point, trying Korean food was in order and I'd read good things about Koba, situated off Tottenham Court Road. We arrived and enquired as to the availability of a table for two and after a little discussion we were shown to our seat. (Which was lucky cause we hadn't booked either).
Koba is a trendy modern decorated restaurant which is large enough to give each table enough space for privacy, but small enough to create a warm atmosphere. Each of the tables has a hotplate for cooking food in the centre with a shiny extractor fan above.
After ordering and receiving a couple of bottles of Korean beer, we waited for our starters, Spicy prawns and dumplings. Both the starters were very nice, but very similar to Chinese and Japanese dishes I've had previously. After eating the starter, the main event was getting set up.
The duck and marinated beef we had ordered was brought to the table raw, along with a bowl of lettuce; some soy bean paste; sauce for the duck and a sort of salad dish. The helpful staff instructed us on the correct way to eat the food. First the duck was placed on the hot plate and cooked at the table. Then you take a piece of lettuce, remove some duck from the hot plate and dip it in the sauce before placing it on the lettuce. The soy bean paste and garnish are added and the whole thing is wrapped up into a parcel.
The sauce was amazing, with a hint of horseradish and the saltiness of the bean paste making an interesting taste combination. What looked liked only a small amount of duck went a long way and we still had the beef to go. The beef was cooked in similar manner and tasted excellent, having been marinated in some kind of amazing tasting sauce.
All in all, the Korean BBQ was a success, the meat was delicious and very thinly sliced which meant cooking it took very little time, the sauces and condiments used were great and the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly.
I most highly recommend Koba for anyone living in or visiting London who is looking for something a little different.
